Those who don"t acknowledge problem often are noncompliant with treatment. A lot of motivation needed to start and stick with treatment. Often coming in not b/c they"ve acknowledged the problem but because they are under external pressure (from wife, police, etc. ) Some argue that total abstinence is only true treatment goal, others argue that moderate use is okay. Preventing relapse and coping with it is now known to be part of. Detoxification: abrupt and complete cessation of alcohol intake. Coupled with substitution of drugs that have similar effects of alcohol, in order to prevent withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms may include visual and tactile hallucinations. Disulfiram (antabuse): blocks body"s ability to breakdown alcohol. Become extremely sick if they have alcohol. Effectiveness not always shown b/c people less inclined to take the drug. Especially for people who also have depressive disorder. Recoverers follow 12 step program that is spiritually focused. Drop out rates are very high, especially early in treatment.
