All-encompassing (paid + unpaid activity that produce benefits for society  caregiving,
volunteerism, contributing informally to family, friends, neighbors, community)
Has to do with biological self, psychology, social life
Participating in a way that makes us feel good about ourselves and others
Contributes to longevity?
oHabits over lifetime
Leisure activities (any non-work characterized by absence of obligation)
oCooking, sleeping, instruments, exercise
oOften overlap between our age and older people
Get upset because can’t participate  feel isolated, loss of purpose/roles,
sadness, decreased morale (can lead to early death)
oBenefits of participating:
Destress, happiness, connections (build social support systems), get outside
(older adults reap the same benefits), sources of personal meaning & being
valued, positive identity, self-concept, life satisfaction

oEmbraces values of hope, gratitude, forgiveness, may involve giving back
Participating in religious activities/affiliated groups offers loving supportive community
Spirituality = believing in one’s relationship w/ higher power w/out being religious (organized
religious)
oMay involve giving back
oShould it be involved in health care?
Religious institution: most common choice for older people
oOffers tangible + emotional support
