Class Notes: December 3, 2012 Conformity = occurs when an individual changes their attitudes/behaviors to comply with social norms, rules, or expectations about how they should behave in various situations  Role of Gender = men and women don’t differ  Individuation helps stop conforming Compliance = direct efforts by individuals to change the behaviors of others  Cialdini (“Influence”) – Six Principles: 1) Friendship/Liking = more willing to comply with people who are nice 2) Commitment/Consistency = if people’s views/actions are consistent, we agree more 3) Scarcity = value things/actions that are rare 4) Reciprocity = when someone helps us, we are more likely to help them 5) Social Validation = want to maintain consistency with people who are in or group 6) Authority = comply with people in power Compliance Techniques 1) Ingratiation = flattery, c
