Creator of the horizontal style of soloing using repeated tones and lots of space in his improvisations. Became and jazz legend, inventing or establishing much of the outside" hipster ethos which came to be associated with the music (use of the word cool for example) Edward kennedy duke ellington (april 29, 1899-may 24, 1974) American jazz composer, pianist, and band leader. One of the most influential figures in jazz, if not in all american music.
