Document Summary
Social psychology studies how we"re influenced by others . Emphasizes that situations can have powerful influence on how people think, feel, and behave. In many cases, a situation can have more powerful influence on a person"s behavior than his/her own personality! Implied- security cameras within a store, something within environment implies the presence. Social psychology uses science to find the most reliable rules about human thought, emotion, and behavior. Self-fulfilling prophecy: others" expectations and beliefs about us can influence our self-concept and behavior. Step 1: perceiver creates expectation of target. Step 2: perceiver acts towards the target based on expectations. Step 3: target interprets the perceiver"s actions and responds so that his or her behavior is consistent with the perceiver"s expectations. Teacher"s are perceivers, students are the targets. Teacher"s given expectation that student would do better later on. Teacher"s would then in turn respond to this expectation and push it onto the student.
