The major film studio of italy - cinecitta had been damaged during. Directors took to the street and countryside to (cid:498)get real(cid:499) in the desperate post-war circumstances, and because the studio was unavailable. They used post-synchronization for dialogue and most sound so shooting on location was more feasible. They began to critically examine and even de-construct recent history. Italy had been a fascist government from the mid-20s until the end of wwii under benito mussolini and had been allied with germany and the nazis. Many battles of the war had been fought in italy and there was much damage from the war, both physically and psychologically. Italians had collaborated in the holocaust but had also overthrown mussolini and had vigorously resisted the nazi occupation. The early neo-realists, especially roberto rossellini, presented contemporary stories from the popular front resistance movement of 1943- Rome, open city roma citta aperta (1945) Germany, year zero germania anno zero (1948)
