BIOL 141 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Cytoplasm, Hemoglobin, Plant Cell
Document Summary
Every cell in our body has the same genome, but doesn"t necessarily express the same genes. On electron micrographs, genes in the dna are expressed as darker spots. Templates needed in each cell determine the density of the dna. Allow us to control what area of the genome is expressed. In plant cell, dark spot in nucleus is the nucleolus. To get a large surface area into a small space, fold it up. So there"s greater surface area in a smaller space. Can infer type of cell by complexity of organelles. Ex: lots of er, more protein synthesis and packaging would happen. Variance in the amount and complexity of organelles within cell types. If glucose is on one end of the cell and the enzyme it needs on the other, it is hard for that reaction to occur. Synthesis vs. degradation in different compartments per the needs of the cell. Break down more variable things, including organelles and acids.
