Pierre charles alexandre louis and the paris school of medicine 1800-1850. Louis was born on 14 april in ay, france. Studied medicine and went to russia in 1814 where he practiced odessa. He decided to give up practicing and go into research. Returned to france in 1821 and devoted himself to observation of disease. His motto - the medical art entirely consists of observations . Carefully recorded 2,000 clinical observations plus autopsy. His originality was to apply to medicine a standardized method of data collection and analysis. This is the medical method we still teach medical students today. One for a standardized method for obtaining information from patients. One for collecting information on multiple patients with the same illness to analyze the effectiveness of treatments, the numerical method. It"s argued that he would be the first epidemiologist. Not just studying an individual patient, but the population as a whole.
