Darwin and animal behavior: general principles of expression- Ritualization (behavior is repetitive and eventually becomes a signal in species) Evolution of communication: behavior became a method of comparison b/w species by early ethologists. Behavior evolves over time: originally ethology tried to understand how, emphasis was pit on inherited behavioral response (instinct) A behavior pattern that appears without learning and is functional from the first occurrence: analysis of unit of inherited behavior- (cid:862)the fi(cid:454)ed a(cid:272)tio(cid:374) patter(cid:374)(cid:863) Responses normally require a sign stimulus (releaser) to over: key to causing a fap, there is an innate neural circuit that triggers this mechanism in response to the stimulus. Instinct is not necessarily a fixed action pattern. Once a fap is started it continues till completion even if it is not appropriate. Fap are generally related to behavioral adaptations that make organisms more able to survive.
