Shifts the focus from national comparisons (between countries) to within-countries or across subnational units between countries. May help with the problem of small n, many variables . Increase the capacity to accurately code their cases (whole nation bias) - mean spirited analysis: inappropriate uses of national averages . Better equipped to handle spatially uneven processes. This study compares states, counties within states, individuals within states. Conclusions are very different depending on what type of data you compare. Yi = republican vote = alpha + beta(income)i i = can be a state, or an individual, or a state-individual, or a county-state ij = i is individual, j is state. Depending on i, conclusions might be different. Republicans have done better in poor states than in rich states. In southern states, still negative, but less relationship. Figure 3 but if you look within states, it"s the opposite. The poor are less likely to vote republican.
