Moved ocd from anxiety disorders to obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. Moved body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder) to the. New disorders, hoarding and excoriation, previously were just symptoms and are now their own disorders. Change because they hope this will increase the diagnostic accuracy and more effective treatment. Obsessions: intrusive and recurring thoughts, images, impulses experienced and disturbing and anxiety provoking; internally generated threat. In other anxiety disorders, the anxiety is typically because of an external stimulus (snakes, people, school) In ocd, the danger is internal and comes from the obsessions. Not compatible with one"s system of beliefs or what they expect from themselves. Compulsions: repetitive excessive behavior or mental acts designed to reduce. Compulsions: repetitive excessive behavior or mental acts designed to reduce the anxiety associated with the intrusive obsessive thoughts; tend to be avoidance behaviors. Not just behaviors, can also be mental acts. Ex: excessive hand washing vs repeating prayers or counting.
