Characteristics of lucid dreaming and lucid dreamers (stumbrys et al. , various papers) Subjects can train themselves to lucid dream, especially by rehearsing, before sleep, the intent to notice bizarre events of a dream, other techniques. Technique for signaling to the "outside world" via ems developed by keith hearne in england (1978): voluntary eye movements during dream followed by retrospective reports. Described further/popularized by laberge (1980) in stanford ph. d. thesis; "lucidity institute"; high density of rems in ld. For lders, mean age of first ld is approximately 15, most between 5-25. 40-60 percent based on who you ask: most first ld are spontaneous (~83%); some via training/intention or relaxation methods. Frequency of ld not different by sex; women more likely spontaneous (vs. trained) lders and less likely to influence dream story actively. Eye movement signals and emg activity in ld versus other states. Voss et. al. (2009) study; whenever you see wec -stands for wakefulness with eyes closed.
