Alice in wonderland example: caterpillar (who are you, she knew who she was when she woke up, but now doesn"t know because it seems as though she"s changed a lot. Goal is self-understanding: personal memories, representations of self. Major impact that you still remember vividly. Important in how people think of themselves. Provides continuity in present life based on what"s happened before. (ex. parents getting divorced, making a big save in a soccer game, etc. ) Descriptors that individuals use to talk about themselves. Might be about the ideal self (i want to be a psychologist) Might be about the past self (i used to be shy) Enable people to identify which characteristics of the self they see as relevant. Hierarchical order (most important come to mind quicker)
