9-12 genesis the primeval history (genesis 4-11) Need some anthropomorphism to talk about god"s activity: god is cosmic and transcendent remote, distant, less personal. For example: genesis 5-13: 6:5-8 = j, yahweh, regretted, grieved to his heart inner emotional life. Heart was the seat of the will, rather than emotion at the time. Grieved in part of his being that focused on the will. He"s grieved at the place where"s he"s made a decision he sees as a bad one. Disappointed strongly, not heartbroken: emotion language, anthropopathism, if yahweh can regret something, it shows the nature of god isn"t perfect. Implies not knowing something would happen, it happens, then you feel sorry it happened. Very abstract: opposite of the creation story where god saw and it was good, and god saw and it was corrupted. Text doesn"t acknowledge god"s mistake: doesn"t show any thought the end of all flesh has come before me .
