Ethos-Pathos-Logos
The advertisement is an Anti-Gun Poster from 1981, directly directed to the American
citizens. The poster is made to convince the Americans to support the handgun ban from
America. Richard Branson is the author of the poster and it uses Ethos-Pathos-Logos to make
a point.
Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or
credibility of the persuader. This advertisement represent ethos through the credibility of the
information right under the gun. The information gives the address and phone number of
Handgun control, which is a non-profit organization to prevent gun violence, and where you
can write or call to for more information.
Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by
creating an emotional response. There are three things that immediately catch the eye. The
first one is the text. The advertisement starts with last year. The handgun killed’, followed
with the amount of people being killed due handguns, ending with the most in America. The
second one that catches the eye is the gun tactical painted in the colors of the American flag.
The last one is the text under the gun. Stop handguns, before they stop you”. This sentence
can scare people and it can make them change their mind about guns.
Logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. The numbers
of deaths through handguns is based on facts. Richard Branson did his research, before
making this poster.
