CTAC 225 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Engagers, Conflict Resolution, Social Perception
Document Summary
We value intrinsic attributes more than traditional external qualities like good looks, money and social status. Friendships are based on perceptions that each person is equal & the feelings are reciprocated. (not feeling like the relationship is forced) We begin to use the term friend at age four; however, friend is used in familiarity with a peer. Voluntarily: to enter into a relationship, unforced. Equality: how we are expected to be seen and treated. Reciprocity: how we expect the friendship to be returned. Friendships tend to become more narrow as we age, friendships are focused and based on supportive and helping behaviors. Express agreement, acknowledgement and show more concern. Fewer close friendships w/ low levels of intimacy. Understanding, acceptance, trust and respect help self-esteem and confidence. Older children (five to eight years old) begin to develop a broader, and narrower, view of friendship. Friendships becomes more closely associated with supportive or helping behaviors.
