GEOG 107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Ecotourism, Volcanism, Plate Tectonics
Document Summary
Four major earth systems: atmosphere the envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another plane, hydrosphere. All water on earth is part of this. Fluvial processes; including : erosion, transportation of materials (sediments, depositing materials (sediments sinking to bottom/ mouth of river, lithosphere. Iron core: inner core- solid iron/ nickel, outer core- liquid iron/ nickel, 3000 to 6000 degrees kelvin. Mantle: viscous, molten layer of silicon. Crust: 3 to 37 miles thick, varies between continental and oceanic (thinner) crust, silicon rocks. Plate tectonics: 13 major plates, plate boundaries, divergent: moving apart, convergent: coming together (one plate is recycled, transform: sliding horizontally past each other. Gentle flow, non-irruption volcanoes: biosphere the regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth (or analogous parts of other planets) occupied by living organisms. Ecotourism: a form of tourism based around visiting pristine natural environments and largely undisturbed areas. For countries: promoting tourism as a key to their economy.
