The Gatekeeper
Function where writers pick the best story (what goes 'into the gate' and what 'goes out of the gate').
The Five W's and H
Who, What, When, Where, Why, How.
Elements of Newsworthiness
Impact, Proximity, Timeliness, Celebrity, Oddity, Conflict, Relevance, Usefulness, and Human Interest.
Impact
Determined by the number of people or things affected. The bigger the number the larger the impact.
Proximity
The closer the audience is to the event the more attention from the audience living in that area.
Timeliness
News stories can be big or small depending on when they're happening.
Celebrity
Stories about people the audience cares about versus people they've never heard of.
Oddity
Events that are unusual or bizarre.
Conflict
War, politics, crime, etc.

Usefulness
or How the information can be used at home, businesses, etc.
Human Interest
Whether or not it will interest the reader. If people are talking about it, it's news and vice versa if people
aren't.
Lead
Must be straight to the point, punchy, focuses of the action, and hooks the reader.
Nut Graph
Answers the question of "Why am I writing this?" (The point of the story)
Quotes
Shouldn't be used for information you came explain in your own words, and it must be the exact words
of the source. Correct punctuation is: "I won't run for president," Dan Quayle said Thursday. "But I may
walk a little."
Transitions
Transitions smooth out jags and make it easier to read, events must be in chronological order, don't use
"then" more than once.
Endings
Gives a "rounded out" feeling to the story, makes a reference to the lead.
ABC's of news writing
Accuracy, Brevity, and Clarity.
Ten-Point Checkoff List

2.Brevity
3.Clarity
