PSY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Operant Conditioning, Classical Conditioning
Document Summary
Learning: relatively permeant changes in behavior or mental processes caused by experience. Conditioning: process of learning associations between stimuli and behavioral responses. Unconditioned stimulus(us): stimulus that elicits an unconditioned response w/o previous conditioning. Unconditioned response(ur): non-learned reaction to a unconditioned stimulus w/o previous conditioning. Neutral stimulus(ns): doesn"t (naturally) bring about the response of interest. Conditioned stimulus(cs): non-natural stimulus becomes natural due to repeated pairing. Hot water (us) + toilet flushing (ns) = leaving (cr) Acquisition- process of learning the new behavior or pairing. Stimulus generalization- stimuli similar to the original conditioned stimulus (cs) elicit a conditioned response(cr) Stimulus discrimination- only the conditioned stimulus(cs) elicits the conditioned response (cr) Extinction- gradual disappearance of a conditioned response (no more pairing) Spontaneous recovery- sudden, temporary reappearance of a previously extinguished conditioned response. Operant conditioning- behavior is voluntary and interested in consequences. Reinforcement- adding or taking away stimulus that increases the likelihood of being repeated.
