The effect that environmental demands have on the individual organism. Frustration: occurs when a person"s goals are thwarted. Conflicts: occurs when an individual has to decide between mutually exclusive or contradictory. Conflict centers around being presented with a choice that includes significant levels of both desirable and undesirable. Environmental forces that spur us to intensify, quicken, or change the direction of our goal-directed behaviors. When stressful situations exceed our capacity to cope. During this phase of the response to stress, the individual attempts to assess the anger of the stressor that confronts her/him. Individual has assessed the challenge of the stressor and not must. Attempts to change the self, the environment/circumstances, or both. Initiated when a person feels that they cannot adequately cope with a stressor. Utilizes strategies that help to protect the self from hurt or disorganization. Individual who chooses to utilize this approach to coping usually moderates their emotional response to a situation that is otherwise uncontrollable.
