For the final term paper, I would like to research if gender stereotypes in Disney movies
have an effect on a child’s development. Disney is one of the most notorious producers of movies
that are aimed towards young children. More often than not, these movies display gender roles
and stereotypes which can become harmful to impressionable young children because it
reinforces gender stereotyped behavior and career goals that are not reflected in today’s society.

Princesses on Gender Stereotypes, Body Esteem, and Prosocial Behavior in

In this article, Sarah Coyne studies how Disney princess movies have an effect on young
children and whether or not they can influence their behavior. She notes that both genders are
negatively effected by the stereotypes and portrayals of men and woman in these movies. In
these movies, the women are almost always portrayed as damsels in distress who are waiting for
their prince charming to save them. Coyne references a study from 2009 in which young girls
who were exposed to Disney movies from a young age not only pretended to live out the
storyline of a particular movie, but also had extremely high gender expectations.
