Document Summary

Involves the detection of mutant cells by rejection of the unmutated parent cells such as when penicillin resistant bacteria are plated in a medium contianing penicillin. Selects a cell that cannot perform a certain function. Process selects a cell that cannot perform a technique. this is done by growing the bacteria on a medium componsating for htat cells lack. Any mutant microorganism having a nutritional requirement that is absent in the parent. Based on the observation that exposure of mutant bacteria to mutagenic substances may cause new mutations that reverse the effect of original mutation. Typically the higher the concentraiton of mutagen the more reversions will occur. Refers to the exchange of genes between two dna molecules to form new combinations of genes on a chromosome. Steps in genetic recombination: dna from one cell aligns with dna in the recipient cell.
