PCB 4043 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Crypsis, Guppy, Body Armor
Document Summary
Parasite: lives in or on another organisms; usually doesn"t kill host. Parasitoids: insect that lay an egg on or in another insect host. 13. 1: most predators have broad diets, whereas a majority of herbivores have relatively narrow diets. Predators often have much broader diets than herbivores: herbivores have very specific diets- plants are very good at producing compounds that lower their ability to be eaten. Predators have a very high metabolic rate because of the expenditure of energy to get their prey: sit-and-wait predators: remain in one place and attack prey that move within striking distance. Predatory trends can change based on the density of prey: some predator concentrate on whatever prey is more abundant. Example: guppies tend to switch from one prey type to another. Most herbivores are specialized to eat one part of the plant: leaves are the most commonly eaten because they are often the most nutritious part (except for the seeds)
