Document Summary

6. 1- the flow of energy in living systems. Potential energy- where it is stored in chemical bonds (climbing at the top of a ladder) The climbing of the ladder is stored as potential energy, but as she slides down it energy from the sun is used to combine molecules (water and carbon) to complex ons. The sun provides energy for living systems-(ex- calories) Plants, algae, and certain bacteria make up this part of energy that is stored. Heat is a form of energy- hence thermodynamics- heat changes. Redox reactions transfer electrons coupled to each other. During a chemical reaction energy is stored to make new electrons. These play a role in the flow of energy. The first law concerns how much energy is in the universe. The second law states that disorder increases free energy changes. Chemical reactions can be based on changes in free energy. Catalysis- lowering the activation energy to produce a reaction.
