PSY 2012 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Reticular Formation, Global Brain, Prefrontal Cortex
Document Summary
What is consciousness- it takes in a lot of parts of the brain. Awareness (prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate, association areas (global brain workspace)) Of external events and internal sensations which occurs under conditions of arousal. Arousalways that awareness is regulated: alert v. relaxed/drowsy. Knowledge that people think and have private experiences. In children, they believe that everyone thinks like them and that no one has individual thoughts. Individuals with autism- lack of tomm- kids with autism don"t even see that individuals have their own life, everything is with them and about them. Reasoning used after the fact to justify moral decisions. Reasoning used to formulate a moral decision. Executive function- children struggle with this, adhd struggle as well. Lower level of consciousness- buttoning buttons, eating breakfast. Do not interfere with other ongoing activities. Daydreaming- actually helpful but it"s becoming less prevalent in the next generations. It creates theta-waves, and theta-waves leaves to creative individuals.
