TS 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Gabardine, Sateen, Pile Weave
Document Summary
Wrap beam: located at the back of the loom, is a large roller on which all of the wrap yarns to be used for the fabric are wound parallel to each other. Harnesses: look like picture frames holding many thin vertical wires called heddles each with a hole in the middle: wrap yarn is threaded through the hole of the heddle and is thus controlled by that harness. Shed: a harness or group of harnesses is raised with others left in the down position, a v like opening is formed. A filling yarn is interested in the shed and travels across the width of the loom, passing over some warp yarns and under other warp yarns. Reed: comb-like device that pushes the filling yarn in the shed into the body of the cloth. The sequence in which harnesses are raised or lowered determines the weave of the fabric.
