British general who submitted a plan for invading ny through canada but was defeated. Surrendered at saratoga 1777 which helped bring france into war. Worked through the ranks of the english army, took charge of continental army of the north. Victory at saratoga but defeat by cornwallis. Feb 1778: supported u. s. on the side after treaty of paris, officially supported them once they were going to battle against the british. Because of the sol attacks (scorched earth/fires), it turns to an american win. A hit-and-run technique used in fighting a war; fighting by small bands of warriors using tactics such as sudden ambushes. British were not equipped to fight in guerrilla warfare. British told that they need to go to cowpens. Only one way to cowpens, through green river road.
