Document Summary
Conspiratorial violence designed to affect attitudes across multiple audiences. Use small amount of resources to get disproportionate effects. Most terrorists want lots watching; not lots dead. They have a distinct political goal and killing lots of people might actually be counterproductive. Most terrorism doesn"t cause a lot of death. Political terrorism: want to draw attention to cause, examples: 1970s, 80s ira, plo etc, see themselves as legitimate actors. Who will eventually (wish to) become actual leaders: have incentive to control the level of violence. Apocalyptic terrorism: fanatical worldview - see themselves as bearers of the truth - you can join us or you can die, not a distinct set of political goals, not necessarily representing a political constituency beyond the group. They have political goals but with apocalyptic strategies. They see themselves as political guards - us against them. Gross national product (counts only what is produced in the country) Purchasing power parity (relative cost of goods in different countries)
