Refers to a person"s sense of personal and social identity based on those attractions, behaviors expressing them, and membership in a community to share them. People can engage in homosexual behavior but not have a homosexualorientation. Identity (expression of orientation) and behavior may not always be synonymous. In mainstream american culture, we generally recognize 4 traditional categories of orientation (exclusive or discrete) Absence of a traditional sexual orientation- estimated 1% Has little or no sexual attraction to males or females. Sexual behavior and practices with a desire/attraction towards both sexes. Does not require an equal attraction to both sexes. Creation or maintenance of these categories is partly cultural in nature. Other cultures may not share our concepts of sexual orientation. Pansexual: experiences sexual, romantic, physical, and/or spiritual attraction for members of all gender identities/expressions.
