Communication is an exchange of ideas between the sender and receiver (the speaker and listener). The sender encodes the message he/she wants to send as sounds. The receiver decodes the sounds to interpret the message. You can also communicate without speaking (non-verbal language). Body language/gestures (kinesics) are ***non-verbal (unspoken) yet communi- cates ideas. 2/3 of human communication is non-verbal. kinesics are physical, such as facial expressions. Proxemics: space between people ex: you would stand closer to someone you are familiar with, and stand farther away when standing next to a stranger. Tactiles: touching behaviors ex: patting someone on the back when encouraging them.
