CHD-2220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Pituitary Gland, Foreplay, Sexually Transmitted Infection
Document Summary
Egg only lasts for 24 hours after ovulation. Coating on egg keeps egg healthy (protective layer) Sperm cells eat away at outer surface of egg try to penetrate. Groups attempt to break through protective coating. Only one sperm cell can break through and fertilize egg. Formed within body cavity during fetal development. Descend into scrotum during pregnancy: not descended = infertility, one undescended = limited fertility. Scrotum sac outside body cavity to hold testicles. Sperm best produced a few degrees below body temperature. Kept at best temperature within the scrotum. Not all healthy (deformed, dna abnormalities, lack of swimming abilities) Infertility = 40 million sperm cells (10% of normal production levels) Heat exposure can temporarily reduce sperm count: not permanent as far as we know (not long term, ex. men taking hot baths often. Chemical exposure: ex. steroids can cause irreversible damage to fertility. Lead and heavy metal exposure = build ups. Alcohol = leading cause of infertility in males.
