Object permanence is the first sign of symbols but not of symbolic reasoning. Children get generate images in their mind that they can manipulate when they want to solve problems mentally. First symbols = images that we construct in our mind. Children sometimes talk to themselves to help them picture things self-instruction: language is much more advanced symbols. Preoperational stage = gradual/slow progress towards really high cognitive thinking.
