Symbolic reasoning: reasoning with symbols: symbol: mental tool that you use to think with/reason with, schema directs behavior = no thought process. Human brain can generate symbols child has something in their mind that stands for/represe(cid:374)ts so(cid:373)ethi(cid:374)g i(cid:374) reality (cid:894)e(cid:448)e(cid:374) (cid:449)he(cid:374) thi(cid:374)g is(cid:374)(cid:859)t physi(cid:272)ally prese(cid:374)t(cid:895) Images stay in the mind even after the object disappears/gone: mental images used as symbols for real things. Object permanence is the first sign of symbols but not of symbolic reasoning. Children get generate images in their mind that they can manipulate when they want to solve problems mentally. First symbols = images that we construct in our mind. Children sometimes talk to themselves to help them picture things self-instruction: language is much more advanced symbols. Preoperational stage = gradual/slow progress towards really high cognitive thinking.
