2 major components
• The operating system (OS) – most important software on your computer
• Utility software
Operating system software: called the OS or platform
• Provides instructions necessary to run the CPU
• Every computer must have an OS
• Controls the functions of the computer
• Determines the types and permits the use of applications (apps)
Examples: Windows, iOS, Android, Linux
Popular computer platforms:
• Windows OS – most common for personal computers
• Max OS – used on apple computers
• Android OS – most common phone OS
• iOS – operating system used on iPhones
Windows OS:
Most popular OS for personal computers
• Used on a wide variety of laptops, desktops, and all-in-one computers
• Mobile versions of Windows –used on some tables and phones
• Owned by Microsoft
• Latest version is Windows 10
Strengths:
• Most popular OS worldwide
• Used by most businesses and government agencies
• Highest selection of apps
• Many manufacturers = more competition = less expensive
Weaknesses:
• Often considered not as intuitive as Apple products
• Possibly more prone to viruses
• Constantly revised and updated
Macintosh OS:
• Known for great graphics capabilities
• Industry standard for photo editing, film/movie development, graphic design, etc.
• Hollywood loves apple
• Mac OS has a reputation for easy use
Strengths:
• Considered to be very user friendly, intuitive
• Outstanding graphics capability
• Industry standard for photo/video editing

Weaknesses:
• Apple devices = more expensive
• Not as widely used
• Not the best choice for gamers
Android OS:
• Most popular smartphone OS outside of the US
• Used on many tablet computers

Strengths:

• Diverse variety of devices
• Created by Google – works well with Gmail and other Google products

• Freedom
• Security
Weaknesses:
• Steep learning curve
• Lack of program compatibility – many windows programs will not run Linux
• Smaller selection of peripheral hardware drivers
Networking Operating System (NOS): Enables sharing of resources including programs,
printers, databases, and workstations on a local area network (LAN).
• Business use NOS to administer and run their networks
• Popular NOS include: Windows NT, Windows Server, and Unix.
