How is criminal justice different from criminology: criminology studies why someone commits a crime. 1850-1880 crime epidemic: civil war ending, immigration, influx of immigrants in the north (i. e. chicago) 1920-1940 crime was increasing: great depression, prohibition (illegalizing of alcohol led to crime) 1945-1960 crime rates were relatively stable: after wwii; family cohesion, patriotism. 1970s traditional crimes increased: government protests, government distrust (women"s, prisoners" and people with mental or physical disabilities rights) 1980s drug crimes were soaring, increase in all crimes. Increase in crack/cocaine epidemic, drugs led to more crimes. Early 1990s spike in crimes committed by juveniles & violent crimes reached the highest point they had ever been: 1993 is the peak of juvenile crimes.
