MET-1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Advection, Cool Air, Tropopause
Document Summary
Temperature is a measure of molecular motion. It is equal to the kinetic energy of an object. Warm air molecules move faster than the colder and denser air molecules which tend to have more molecules and move slower. Kelvin is based on the notion of absolute zero. Absolute zero is when there is no motion in molecules because the object gets so cold; no thermal motion. Heat= energy that is transferred from one object to another because of a temperature difference. This is the heat that we can physically feel. When we take the temperature outside, we are interested in the sensible heat of the atmosphere. Describe when a molecule (h20) changes phase. The temperature of the molecule remains constant until all of the substance has changed phase completely. For example, you cannot raise the temperature of ice to warmer than 0*c. but when the ice is in your hand, you are continuing to add heat.
