MET-1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Cold Front, Geostrophic Wind, Pressure-Gradient Force
Document Summary
Cold air at surface leads to cold air aloft. Like a bubble resting on the earth"s surface. Similar temperature and humidity at each altitude (different values at each altitude) As air mass forms,it takes on the characteristics of the source region. Maritime polar (mp)- cold, moist (northwest pacific ocean) Maritime tropical (mt)- warm, moist (gulf of mexico) Maritime tropical affects states like florida the most. Continental tropical originates in mexico (only during the summer) Lake effect snow with cp or ca air, you need to cross over the lake. Very cold air masses blowing over a frozen lake. Cold, dry air mass picks up heat and moisture from the great lakes. When air masses move away from their source regions, frontal boundaries may form at their leading edge. A front is a boundary between two different types of air masses. All the tropical air masses are originating from the south. Cold front= cold air replaces (blue line)
