Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. More than managers because they have: vision, resources. Prescribes leaders: chosen to be a leader, ex: jimbo fisher as coach for fsu. Trait: leadership traits = intelligence, assertiveness, self-confidence. Can not determine which traits are leadership traits : lost favor after wwii, little to no research based on this approach, enduring characteristics are important; must be considered within the situations. Behavioral: find common behaviors of leaders and train people to act that way, consideration and initiating structure, successful leaders score high on both, observational studies and qualitative interviews. Situational: leaders have less power than previously thought, they have more influence over what the followers do, too narrow of an approach. Interactional: specific leadership styles fit specific situations. Different athletes want different leaderships: relationship-oriented leaders (current views of leadership) Develop and maintain good interpersonal relationships: task-oriented leaders.
