didn’t want to stay in America wanted to get rich and then go back. Greek Orthodox Churches,
moss for Muslims, immigrant organization.
Sacco and Vanzetti: The Red Scare after the WWI, beginning of the 1910s and 1920s, two
Italian immigrants were arrested for thief but not proven. Political anarchists. They believed
that violence was acceptable, class warfare. They believed that they were being arrested due to
their political views and that they were Italian. Mass protested the death penalty on these men.
President of Harvard University viewed this case and ruled it fair so those men were killed but
probably didn’t commit that crime. Native born Americans were extremely prejudice.
Ku Klux Klan- targeted Syrians and other racial groups, 20th century, championed 100%
Americanism, Jews Catholics Blacks immigrants were enemies, and not just a southern but it
controlled the Indiana political party, Oregon. Another migration of blacks moving to the North,
industries became open to hiring blacks in factories. Business interest supported immigration
limits,
1924 Congress the Johnson Reed Act: restrictions on immigration, they established a
quota system for every Europe country, limited the annual number of immigrants with a quota
who can come to America 2% population of those countries can come to America. Established a
preference system, if you were an American women and married a foreign would lose their
settlement of America. Mexican and Canadian immigrants were not limited. No Asians at all.
This slowed migration from everyone. Immigration from Italy was reduced 90%. Racist Act
proved northern Europeans were elite compared to southern and eastern Europeans.
