Faction formed within the party that was essentially fed up with grant and his shenanigans. Members of this faction weren"t necessarily of identical political ideologies and opinions - but they all shared their contempt for grant. They supported horace greeley in the 1872 presidential elections. Liberal republicans joined up with the democrats in order to try to unseat. This caused issues because greeley had made many poor statements about democrats in the past which hurt him at the polls. Grant had the support of masses and still ran on the platform that he ended the war". Grant won decisively and it began to show that people were over reconstruction. The debate shifted the focus from the speci c postwar interests of the north and south independent of one another, to the greater game of tug of war between the republican and democratic parties. Republicans symbolized small government democrats represented bigger government and the ght for civil rights.
