International relations seeks to understand how people and countries get along: from open warfare to peaceful cooperation. People fight each other everywhere in all types of ways. All of the above conflicts have consequences: displaced people 65. 3 million, refugees 21. 3 million, stateless people 10 million. Estimated >15,000 nuclear weapons: 9 countries possess them. For 13 days in oct. 1962, two countries almost blew everyone else up. Some countries : are more populous, have a larger gdp, use more than others (energy consumption, are sicker than others (infant mortality rate) Theory logically consistent set of statements that explains a phenomenon of interest. Bargaining when actors must choose outcomes that may make one better off than another. Interests what actors want to achieve through political action. Institution set of rules that structure interactions in specific ways: redistributive, allocating a fixed sum of values between different actors.
