Lungs are the site of gas exchange through the sacs called alveoli. Here oxygen diffuses into the blood stream to then be transported around the body, whereas co2 is diffused across and expired into the environment as a byproduct. Provides muscles with nutrients and o2 so that high energy output can be maintained when needed. Functions: nutrient distribution, temperature regulation, protection, communication (hormonal), metabolite removal, and gas transport. Blood flow to skin to regulate temperature and evaporate heat. 7,200 l of blood is circulated through the body per day. Slow twitch so has fat on outside, insulation, protection. For every cardo cell, there is one nucleus. Desmosomes connect cells mechanically; gap junctions connect cells electrically. Automaticity = the cardiac cell"s ability to spontaneously generate an electrical impulse (depolarize) Sa node: collection of cells that will trigger hr in right atrium. Arch of aorta: primary bend the aorta takes. Left pulmonary artery: take blood to the lungs.
