PSY-2012 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Presbycusis, Hindbrain, Optic Nerve
Document Summary
Motor cortex is part of the frontal lobe. The somatosensory cortex is part of the parietal. Limbic system- emotional enter of the brain: includes thalamus, amygdala, and hippocampus, thalamus sits on top of brain stem, amygdala- tied to emotions (aggression and fear, important in the formation of emotional memories. Hippocampus- okays a role in processing explicit memory. Hypothalamus- deals with the 4 f"s: fighting, fleeing, feeding and sex. You don"t need to know the different parts of the brain stem. Cerebellum- controls balance and coordinated movement, procedural movement (riding a bike) The pons, medulla, and the cerebellum comprise the hindbrain. Sensation- the detection of physical energy by sense organs: the stimulus is converted into neural activity via transduction. Perception- the interpretation of raw sensory inputs: involves integration of outside worlds and one"s own, involves inner worlds (previous knowledge, closely tied to thought and memory (loud ringing=that"s my alarm clock)
