Document Summary

Data show an increase in the chances that first marriages will end (in separation or divorce) for marriages that began in the 1950s through the 1970s. From the early 1970s to the late 1980s, the rates of breakup were fairly stable. The probability of remarriage following divorce has decreased slightly, and the probability that the second marriage will break up has risen from the 1950s to the 1980s. Results consistently show that the cohabitations and (cid:373)arriages of (cid:862)(cid:374)o(cid:374)-hispanic (cid:271)la(cid:272)k wo(cid:373)e(cid:374)(cid:863) are less sta(cid:271)le tha(cid:374) those of (cid:862)(cid:374)o(cid:374)-hispa(cid:374)i(cid:272) white wo(cid:373)e(cid:374)(cid:863). An analysis of trends over time suggests that differences by race/ethnicity are becoming more pronounced in recent years. Racial differences observed are associated with individual characteristics and with the characteristics of communities in which the women live. Probability for first-marriage is lower for non-hispanic black women than for other women. Probability for first-marriage by age 18 and by age 30 is lower for non-hispanic black women.
