Lone wolves: masculinity, cinema, and the man alone. Two dimensions to studies: theoretical engagement with feminist ideas (mulvey, the applications of psychoanalytic theory to cinema. An empirical concern with the rise of the action hero and the spectacle of the male body: rambo, the terminator. Man-hater femme fatale, rom-coms, love interest to male hero. Examples: glenn close in fatal attraction, tom cruise in top gun. Characterized by their silence on some trauma they"ve experienced. An emotional resistance that makes them more alluring. Examples: sean connery as james bond. Lauren mulvey"s idea of visual pleasure in film. Women are the object of male gaze. Two fold idea: voyeuristic ( peeping tom"), pleasure derived from looking, narcissism, pleasure derived from recognition & identification. Masculinity looks, whilst femininity is looked at. The male and the masculine cannot bear the burden of sexual objectification. Downplays the importance of female pleasure in looking and female spectatorship. Doesn"t include complex forms of identification (ex. homoeroticism)
