Document Summary

Info age implies that we are exposed to more info than ever before. But to handle it, discern what"s important and true. Doesn"t mean we should descend into complete negativity. Skepticism requires carefully choosing and examining what one decides to believe in. If media promotes cynicism, media literacy promotes skepticism. E. g. people who listen to conservative talk radio already agree with conservative agenda. Selective perception: how we process info to which we are exposed. Selective retention: most likely to remember things that support our view of others, the world, and ourselves. Most likely to forget things that conflict with those views. Most mass media want to maintain a certain comfort level for audiences. Most mass media shy away from challenging common assumptions about social and economic order of world.
