Two different areas covered by the class racial and cinematic. Representation something re-presented (not reality it is the vision of a situation or people) How does racial and national transform into representation. Films are not reality, they are all open to interpretation. Script, sound, acting, scene, images either in whole or independently. The audience has a subjective background that shapes meaning. Meaning can be subjective, and there can be constructed meanings. Palimpsest parchment a manuscript was written on and rewritten. Film is a palimpsest where they are re-evaluated and re-interpreted. Horror creepy music, strange character, young female lead. Cinema plays on culturally accepted codes and conventions which can change over time. Sex scenes are new (used to not show on screen) Pre-determination class, ethnicity, race, religion etc. is what you are and defines you. Self-determination you are what you make yourself to be. Consent you actively choose or take part in something.
