City controlled by armed people (50,000) roaming city. Working people, immigrants- against blacks, politicians, wealthy. Immigrants (irish) thought america would give them better life compared to home country but they were still poor. Myth of immigrants taking jobs, still around today and was a major component. Class and racial resentment- similar to lynchings in south after war. Attacks on police, militia, politicians, blacks, wealthy. Army eventually came and brought peace (mostly irish soldiers)- fired against fellow irish people. Reporter- give people knowledge of life in tenements so that change could occur (most important goal/idea) Observational author, details on individuals and families. Purpose/agenda- sympathy for lower class, describe the conditions to cause change. Audience- new yorkers (wealthy, politicians), riis acting as the voice of the poor. Limitations- he was poor himself but he never gave any personal stories of experiences. View from his shoulder- look of what is happening as it does, organized as a ramble .
