Competition is cruel and wasteful: drives market economy. Was a concept before marx: st. simone imagined a plan for an ideal society, charles fourier believed in small community. Similar to communism but not quite: robert owen thought a lot about fairness. Tried to create ideal community in scotland and then in indiana. Reject the idea of profit and middle class values. Came from wealthy german family: moved to paris and met engel. Together they wrote the communist manifesto in 1848. The communist manifesto: inspired by the french revolution. Influenced by philosopher hagel"s dialect of ideas": discussion of 2 ideas. Hagel said all of history was dialectic. Thesis and antithesis: marx says history is dialectic of material forces. Primary way history moves forward is class conflict: class conflict happens because of material forces i. e. taxes, power, etc. Hierarchy of power: feudalism nobility/clergy on top, peasants/serfs on bottom, factory system middle class on top, working class on bottom.
