Sallust expects he will get criticism for this work. You are just writing out of hatred or envy. Trying to explain his reasons for writing this. Rome is so corrupt it rubs off on even the best of people, himself included. Not gaining office the way you should be. Want the praise of the wrong people. Desire to be in public light and corruption of city led to sallust"s end in office. He should be virtuous, but he"s not. He is going around starting a civil war and civil discourse. Profligacy do not care about possessions, want and spend a lot. Aspirations to tyranny leader trying to take over the state. Romans did not like the idea of a single ruler.
