Spermatogenesis: primary spermatocytes replenished by the division of spermatagonia. Under go meiosis i to produce secondary spermatocytes and. Oogenesis: primary oocytes are already placed in the female before birth. Undergo meiosis i to produce secondary oocytes with the first polar body and meiosis ii to produce ovum and second polar body. Fertilization: fusion of the male and female gametes. Series of events that occur, varying with type of species. Assuring the sperm of one species is fertilizing the egg of the same, exact, correct species. (in sea urchins) vitelline envelope have protein species binding receptors. Sperm have binder that attach to the receptors on the egg. Each species have different shaped receptors and binders to ensure egg sperm recognition. The acrosome (head) of the sperm has enzymes that digest the coat surrounding the eggs that contacts the inner membrane. Then the head of the sperm is drawn through the plasma membrane of the egg.
